Kanzemizu and Butterflies
Kanzemizui is a type of spiral pattern in which running water seems to be swirling. This name came from Tayu Kanze of kanze school, one of the schools of Noh, which used it as a formula pattern. Since it extends sideways in a spiral shape, it can be drawn by connecting it vertically and horizontally. It is also used for Noh costumes in the Edo period and is still widely used for current kimonos, obi, and white fabric crests. It was from the middle of the Heian period that the butterfly pattern was used in the Japanese style, and it was from the Momoyama period that Noh costumes and Kosode used it as a design. The reason that the butterfly pattern has been favored is because of its loveliness in shape, but also from the magical mystique, feeling sensed from their changing in forms. From eggs, it turns to a green worm and a caterpillar, then finally becomes a beautiful butterfly to fly high away. This aspect of the butterfly became a symbol of immortality for the warriors’ coat of arms.
