Full of Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums, which were introduced from China during the Nara and Heian periods, are representative plants that symbolize longevity. There is the legend of “Kikusui'', which says that a villager who drank the water flowing from a chrysanthemum colony in the headwaters of the Yellow River in China was able to prolong his life. It is based on the legend of the Noh play "Kikujido," which is said to have had a long life.In fact, chrysanthemums have antibacterial properties and are used in chrysanthemum namasu (dish of raw fish and vegetables seasoned in vinegar) and chrysanthemum sake. In Japan, it has been customary since the Heian period to drink chrysanthemum Japanese sake at the Imperial Palace on September 9th. The chrysanthemum, which has taken root in Japanese culture, has come to be admired as an autumn flower.
There are a wide variety of patterns, such as realistic designs of chrysanthemum flowers and leaves, as well as those combined with rhombuses and circles. As the cultivation of chrysanthemums flourished in the Edo period, the variety of chrysanthemums inevitably increased. It is also preserved in Noh costumes. There are various colors and shapes, but the Kikuzukurimon is a combination of these patterns.
In addition to realistic chrysanthemums, this fabric also has a chrysanthemum pattern called Koringiku.Korin is a painter born in Kyoto in the middle of the Edo period. Using familiar motifs such as chrysanthemums, plums, pine trees, and waves, he boldly simplifies the details while remaining based on sketches, and his sophisticated style is unparalleled. It took the world by storm as a simple pattern. His innovative painting style was so popular that it was even published in a model book for kosode at the time, and it was very popular not only in the Edo period but also in the Meiji and Taisho eras. This Korin chrysanthemum is a simplified pattern of chrysanthemum flowers, and it is called "manju(a steamed bun) chrysanthemum" because its thick and round shape resembles a steamed bun. In addition, it is also called "manju (infinitely long life)chrysanthemum" to pray for longevity, and it is considered to be the best auspicious crest.
