Chrysanthemums originated in China and were brought to Japan as a medicinal herb during the Nara period. In Japan, the Chinese style chrysanthemum feast began to be held on September 9th.Chrysanthemums became objects of appreciation, and people drank chrysanthemum sake to pray for perpetual youth and longevity.
The chrysanthemum design was also seen in the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, and in the Momoyama period, it came to be treated as one of the autumn plants of Japanese design.
In the Edo period, chrysanthemum varieties were improved and there were many types, so various chrysanthemum designs appeared, from pretty wild chrysanthemums to large-flowered chrysanthemums. Chrysanthemums may be characterized not only by their beauty and fragrance, but also by the fact that they are congratulatory flowers that symbolize longevity.
Chrysanthemums are also used for seasonal decorations such as New Year's Day, Boys' Festival, and Shichi-Go-San Festival. This is because it has been said that "arranging chrysanthemums will bring up good children'' and "decorating chrysanthemums will bring good fortune.''
The color and shape of chrysanthemums on this fabric are various, but the chrysanthemum pattern is a pattern or a combination of them. While the gold-rimmed chrysanthemums add a touch of glamor, the pale colors create a gentle atmosphere.
